Trouble Enjoying Your Retirement?

You’ve finally made it, and you’re retired.  You’ve left the rat race for a well-deserved rest and some fun.  But now that the reality has sunk in of your exit from the working world, you find that you’re having some wakeful nights thinking about your wallet.  Are you so worried about running out of money that you’re unable to enjoy retirement?  You probably don’t have a clear plan to guide your everyday financial decisions.  While it can be relatively easy to see what your cash inflows and outflows are to assess your spending against your retirement capital, it is a bit harder to develop a multi-decade plan for how you plan to spend money on yourself, leave a legacy for your family or others, and plan for unexpected contingencies.

It can be a struggle to make the transition from saver to spender, or spender to saver.  You may even feel guilty about spending your hard-earned money to actually enjoy life – even if you have the income to support it.  Here are two tips on how to shift the focus of priorities and start enjoying your retirement years.

Make Yourself a Priority

Yes, you can make yourself a priority!  You’ve EARNED this retirement and that means sometimes having to say no to adult children, siblings or even your own parents.  In retirement,  you need to live with what you have and set boundaries, not just on finances but also limits on your emotional and time commitments.

Work Part-Time

If you are physically able, working part-time can be a great way to stay active and engaged socially, while drawing in extra income. However, the difference now is that you are working mainly for enjoyment and to maintain purpose in your life.  Is there a side gig you have always wanted to start up, or a new skill you want to learn?  Many people do not get the opportunity to pursue their true passion in their main career, so your early retirement years may represent an opportunity for you to try something new, pursue a long overdue passion project, and if you can make money at it, even better!  Working for the social aspect alone can introduce a whole new way of “working.”  You may even enjoy it!
