Study 1 (Yoshikawa et al., 2019, Japan)
According to this study in Japan, an open-label trial with 17 participants from an elderly day care center involved 4 weekly sessions of stand-up comedy as laughter therapy. This approach led to significant improvements, including reduced systolic blood pressure and heart rate, increased plasma serotonin levels, decreased salivary chromogranin A (a stress marker), and enhanced scores on the SF-8, GDS-15, and Vitality Index.
Study 2 (Ghodsbin et al., 2014, Iran)
According to this research in Iran, a randomized controlled trial with 72 participants aged 60 and older included 12 sessions over 6 weeks, with two 90-minute sessions per week. The study found notable improvements in general health, somatic symptoms, anxiety, and insomnia, but did not show significant changes in social dysfunction or depression.
Study 3 (Gonot-Schoupinsky & Garip, 2018, USA)
According to a systematic review in the US, which examined 5 laughter interventions, all studies revealed at least one significant positive effect on well-being. The review underscored the need for better measurement of individual laughter responses.
